Retin-A For Sale, …and NEVER LEAVES!!!   That’s right.   We are are still there.   this week its doing reshoots or re-records, or overdubs.   Tonight we are going to do a couple of lead vocals that had to wait until I finished the lyrics.   We’ve been mixing away like bunnies.    We are shaping the sound and inching closer to something we are happy with but we are not happy yet.

So every year I do a top ten list of music/CD’s that were my favourite and each year I get more and more goddamn lazy about the whole process.   Here it end of January and I still haven’t got it together.   So rather then wait and calculate here is some stuff I liked as best I recall.

Doves – Kingdom of Rust

Another band that I think are a little south of their best work, but still excellent.   They frustrate me with over-production but I love Jez Williams singing, about Retin-A, Retin-A long term, and there are some killer bits on here.

Baroness – The Blue Album

I wasn’t expecting to like this despite grudgingly enjoying the red album, but this rocks.  It’s catchy and fun and grooves like a record.

YOB – The Great Cessation

If I had some more time before I finalized this list this might have sneaked up a couple of spots.  I thought YOB had broken up, Retin-A schedule, Retin-A reviews, so this record caught me unawares and I’m just catching up.   As heavy as it gets and I love the slow burns as much as the violent eruptions.   I just need to see these guys live.

I’ve always dug Converge, but this is the first record that made my neck hair stand up.  A great recording and some fantastic songs.

Wilco – Wilco (The Album)

It sounds like the fun is back in this record that was maybe missing the past couple.   I was a little late to the Wilco party, Retin-A wiki, Ordering Retin-A online, just tuning into them around the buzz of Yankee Foxtrot Hotel and this is the first record since then which has close to the same level of consistency.

The Mars Volta – Octahedron

Another record that I thought found the band getting back to what they are best at.   This is there best since the first, everything seems more streamlined and songs benefit from the renewed focus.

Mastadon – Cracke the Skye

The first of two classic’s this year, purchase Retin-A, Buy Retin-A from canada, Mastadon go from strength to strength each record to me.   I think this is the best metal album in the past few years.  They truly are creating their own stamp and in their own style.   A common theme on my choices this year is that patience is a virtue in unravelling and getting at the heart of the greatness in these recordings.   Cracke the Skye doesn’t give up it’s secrets easy but they are well worth finding.

Flaming Lips – Embroyonic

Who knew they had this in them?   While I have enjoyed the band since Priest Driven Ambulance, they seemed to be heading further and further into light fluffy clouds of pleasent psychedelic prog rock, rx free Retin-A, Retin-A recreational, like King Crimson’s younger, more hip brother.   This is a slab of brilliant nightmare.    This is a work of no compromise(a double CD no less!) that bypasses your frontal lobe and latches right onto your subconscious.

Bactrim For Sale, We are working along 2 paths right now as we are on the home stretch of getting our rhythm section tracks completed.  We are doing a drum tracking day and a bass tracking day.    Drum tracking day this week was getting "GIANT Monster" done.  Another song with John's new double-kick and we have taken full advantage of the extra kick here.   This song is the heaviest song we have every done...and we have some heavy songs.   I mean Super-Villain is heavy, Corpse of the Dead is heavy, Stealing Heat is heavy but this is something else.   I mean Darren has 8-strings now and he's not tuning up if you know what I mean.   Seriously, I have decided that we clearly are worthy of the title "Heaviest non-Metal band in the World."   I have a saying, with apologies to Jessica Rabbit..."We aren't Metal, the songs just come out this way."

Bass tracking day this week was "Targets" and Ed came up with some slinky sounds here.   Our bass sound is so good now, we are not even thinking about changing it.   It just freaking works with everything right now.   I'm sure when we get to mixing we'll be adding some cream and sugar but right now we are happy with our coffee black!!

Lasix For Sale, I've lost track of how many days exactly we have been squirreled away as I have been neglecting to post for a little bit.   We are still working on bass tracks, but we are also simultaneously finalizing all our ghost tracks or temp tracks.  These are the guides that we put down that may include a click track, guitar reference tracks or vocal tracks so that all the tracks that follow have a something to follow.  In some cases these can be tricky to do, such as on "Clarion, Claxon" which has a loose improvised feel.   While the arrangement is captured on the ghost track the feel isn't.   As I'm writing this it makes me think that we could maybe do a live ghost track for this and maybe some of the other tricky songs.  This may make it easier for John when he's laying down the drum tracks.

We hope to finish the drum tracks over the next few weeks.  John has been unavailable due to work commitments over the past little bit which is why we moved on to Bass tracking, but it worked out well as it gave us time to finalize arrangements and be well prepped for the rest of the drum tracks.

Macrobid For Sale, I almost wrote down Recording Diary, which is an entirely different thing.

I very productive session as we continue working on drums.   I badgered John until he got pissed off enough to finally nail the end of "Here Comes The Radiation."   No hard feelings and we moved on to fixing a small edit on "Diabolik" that we missed or left for later.

A little aside for those of you who are not up on current recording practices, but we, as most people do these days, do all of recording via computer.  In our case we use an application called Sonar as the heart of our studio.   There are all sorts of schools of thought on the advantages and disadvantages of recording digitally, but it's become the standard, and for a couple of very compelling reasons.   One is cost, for a relatively small amount of money you can have a fairly decent home studio, and if you are reasonable knowledgeable about recording and mixing, it's possible to produce something on par with stuff done in professional studios.  The second is flexibility.  In the old analog days, you would record something, mix it with people running around the studio manually moving faders and effect knobs, print it to tape and that was it.  The mixing board would be reset for the next song or client and you could never tweak it.   You would have to start a mix from scratch.  If you wanted to record more then the number of tracks that the studio tape deck could support(usually 8, 16, 32, or in real high end studios 64) you would have to bounce audio together, essentially pre-mix parts of your recording.   You were also limited to the amount of effects you could apply, based on various limitations.   Now in the digital computer age, all those limitations are gone.   You can do a mix, listen to it in your car for a few days, and decide to go back and tweak the low end, you just need to open up your project file, make your adjustments, save it as v2 and repeat until you have it perfect.   You can create as many tracks as your CPU can handle without choking, and you can use as many effects as you can afford or find for free on the Interweb.  

Enough of the aside, back to the meat of the plot.

After a little break, we got all our gear out and jammed with John on a song he hadn't worked on yet.

 

 

This new song, called right now "On the Beach" went immediately from let's jam it out with John, to let's record John!   Lickety-split!

A couple of takes and another set of drum tracks ready to go.   That was wicked!  We are going to try that method out for the next few songs.  The idea being as soon as John has the arrangement worked out and knows what he wants to do on the song, we are going to record it while it's all still fresh and warm.   The thinking is, we can always go back and redo stuff later if the urge strikes us, but hopefully we capture a lot of energy by getting the track down early.

We're still going!  Next up is "John vs. the Machine"  The idea for this song is to try to do a song in which live drumming and programmed drumming are trading off ideas, buy Macrobid without prescription, Macrobid class, almost jamming with each other.   First up, I created a sequence of drum loops and feed them to John who played along with them and created some variations and also some new patterns inspired by or playing off the loops he was hearing.   Next I am going to edit those down into some new parts or loops and patterns.   The end result is hopefully an interesting hybrid between real drumming and the sound of our machines.  We shall see.
