Recording Diary 22

One of these days we will have a webcam whiteboard.   Really.

After fighting through "Hibakusha" the week before, we successfully added two more completed drum tracks during session 22.   Now "Uncanny Valley" and "Pixel Dust" have finished drum tracks.   Happy Days!   John worked so hard, we sent him off to a sunny Caribbean Isle somewhere for the next week.  The rest of us will slog through cold and sleet and slush in order to have some more arrangements worked out.

We are actually doing pretty well.  "The Warning Light is Blinking/Claxon, Clarion" and "Targets/Gulit-Free Crime Spree" are ready to go.   Darren and myself also worked out another new song called "Compass" for now.   This is one of 2 songs that will be drum free so we demo’ed it on the Zoom and will stash it until we finish tracking drums.

Also on the agenda over the next couple of weeks is retro fitting both The Lab and The Nether Regions, the dual Organical recording studios with Sonar 8.   We have been using Sonar 7, and Ed has been grumpy ever since we upgraded from Sonar 5, so hopefully 8 will fix some of the more annoying tendencies. Personally, I haven’t been satisfied with version 7, and for godsakes they better have fixed the metronome!!  (Sonar people know what I’m talking about.)

Just for fun, here’s an up to date list of the songs that are in the pipeline

black hole
black hole quietly
you need help
bugs in the mainframe
here comes the radiation
diabolik
on the beach
john vs. the machine
the callow ones
revenge of the corpses of the dead
pixel dust
uncanny valley
hibakusha

We also have 2 (defenda, compass) that we are not tracking drums on

and several in various stages of readiness.  Are we crazy of what?   The plan, which I might have mentioned in a previous post was to record 20 songs and pick the best for the record.   Well, at last count that’s 15 that are ready for non-drum tracking.

Next time, I’m going to post a little bit more specifically about the drum tracking and I sill plan on doing a big post about the goals we set for ourselves and that shaped the approach to making this record.   I want to get that post done before we finish tracking.
